Crochet Minecraft Blanket Pattern

As promised here is the pattern for the Minecraft Blanket that I made my Mr A.  It’s an easy to pattern to follow as it’s just made up of placing the granny squares in the appropriate positions to get the picture you want to portray. And lucky for me, Minecraft is a pixel game made up of lots of squares, so a good starting point for my first ever granny square blanket.

Minecraft Blanket Pattern:

Materials:

  • 5mm hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Yarn (see photo chart below)
  • If you’re planning on blocking like I did, you’ll need an iron, something to pin your squares to (I used a cheap Yoga mat from Kmart for $4) and pins. This was my first attempt at blocking as well, so if you have a preferred method of blocking, use that 🙂

NOTES:

  • This pattern is written in US terms with UK translation in brackets ( )
  • The finished fits perfectly on a single bed and measures approximately 172cm x 184cm.
  • Each square measures approximately 8.5cm.
  • Good idea to weave in ends after you finish each square.
  • 8 ply or dk yarn is used (see below for how much).
  • 100gram balls of yarn is used in this pattern

Drawing of steveHere is the original drawing of Steve and the Diamond Sword. This is how I worked out how many squares in each colour to crochet.

PATTERN:

Make a simple solid granny square.

Step 1Step 1. Ch4 (or you can use a magic ring), join with ss to 1st st made, ch2 (counts as dc (tr) here and throughout the pattern), 2dc (tr), *ch2, 3dc (tr)* repeat from * till you have 12 sts, join with ss to ch2 (first dc (tr)).

Step 2Step 2: Ch2, dc (tr) in the next 2 sts, 2dc (tr) in the ch sp, ch2, *2dc (tr) in the ch sp, dc (tr) in the next 3 sts, 2dc (tr) in the ch sp, ch2*, repeat from * to * until you get to the last ch sp, 2dc (tr) in the same ch sp, join with ss to ch2. You should have a total of 7 sts on each side.

Step 3Step 3: Ch 2, *dc (tr) each st across, 2dc (tr) in ch sp, ch2, 2dc (tr) in ch sp*, dc (tr) in each st across (7 sts), repeat from * to * until you get finish crocheting in the last ch sp. dc (tr) in the next 2 sts, join with ss to ch2. You should have a total of 11 sts on each side. Cut yarn and weave in ends.

Yay now you have to make 359 more in the appropriate colours. (see chart above).

Laid out some missing

Throughout making the squares, I found it a good idea to lay them all out to see what the design looked like. It also gave me a sense of accomplishment as you could see it all coming together nicely. Constantly count your squares and tick them off the colours/parts as you do them, it makes it easier when working out what you’ve done and got to do.

BLOCKING

Get your yoga mat/ironing board/or whatever it is you’ve chosen to pin your squares to, pins, iron and squares.

Place a square on the mat and pin out each corner firmly so that it makes a nice square shape (they look more rounded when you just crochet them).

Turn your iron on to steam and hover over the square for a few seconds, remember to not let the iron touch the actual square. Stay about 1-2cm away from it. Let it slightly cool and take it off, leaving the pins there so you have the same size square for the rest of them. Continue until finished.

I’m not entirely sure that the squares need blocking before joining, but it was my first blanket so I blocked, still happy that I did though.

JOINING THE GRANNY SQUARES

Joining the squaresGo with your preferred method for joining squares if you already have one. Otherwise I used Attic24’s Joining Granny Square method. I found that really easy to do.

Laid out

First I laid out the entire blanket then collected the squares in order of their row. I worked horizontally first, but I doesn’t really matter as you do either horizontally or vertically first before starting the opposite way. I started from the top right of the design and working left adding each row underneath and joining that way until I finished joining them horizontally. Vertically joining them was easy as the blanket was already in a ‘finished’ position and all you had to do was join from one side to the other.

Joined togetherOnce you have finished joining you can move onto to the border. I just did a row of sc (dc) in light grey, then a row each of dc (tr) in light grey, dark grey and black. I did put ch2 in the corners of the blanket to keep it flat.

Rarely leaves his sideIt rarely leaves his side and I love that it means so much to him. Makes crocheting it all the more worthwhile and special.

    • Very impressive! I have just finished a blanket of the sword for a young man who is minecraft crazy. I used wool from spotlight but would love to know where you can get RH wool in Australia as I know Big W stock a limited range over winter but cannot find anyone who stocks super saver wool.

  3. Oh my God, my son found your minecraft blanket and was blown away! He is 11 years now and a huge fun of minecraft, so he wants to have the same one for his room 🙂
    Well, actually I found the perfect yarn already, but I want to ask you before I start If I may copy your design. If you agree, I hopefully will do it as a christmas present for 2016 for my son. He doesn’t know about my plans, it will be a secret and I hope to get it done in a few secret ‘hours’ during the year 🙂

Hi Emily ,Can’t thank you enough for allowing us to use your pattern which would have taken hours to work out ….I made 2 in 5 weeks 1 blue ,&the other as outside wall ..replaced blue sky with bright yellow gold the white with grey light blue with lemon …enjoyed making them emensily, not to mention how excited our twin 6yr old grandsons were when they recieved them …would be more than happy to make another….😊 you are such a very clever lady ….a big thank you ance again 😀😀😀😀😀

  7. Wow, It’s awesome!! My son has autism and like many kids w autism he obsess over certain themes. Right now it’s Minecraft! Thank u for sharing ur pattern! I hope I can complete it by his birthday! Im sure he would love it!! His bed us full size, how can I enlarge it? Any particular brand of yarn u would recommend? I just want it like yours and since there r different tones of some colors, it will probably be hard to find. Red Heart maybe? THANKS AGAIN!!! 😘

    • Hi Alma, Thanks for commenting! You’re more than welcome, my brother is on the spectrum too so I know where you’re coming from. This one fits on top of a queen bed (Australian, not sure of others world-wide) but if you wanted to increase, I’d just do more of the sky/grass around the entire thing. Then maybe a thicker border? As to where to buy those colours… I just looked online at the Super Savers from RH, they seem to have good colours so maybe online or a store that you know will stock most. I ended up getting mine from two different stores in Australia. I look forward to seeing what you make xo

  26. My 7 year old boy is little fan of Minecraft. His birthday soon by Dec. I thinking this Minecraft blanket might cheer his day if I prepare this as his birthday present. Thanks so much for the pattern and all helpful information. I thinking to use cotton yarn because I am from Malaysia which summer throughout the year. Do you able to advice how much yarn should I buy for make a same size blanket as you? Is 100g 8ply acrylic same 100g 8ply cotton?

  27. I love the blanket. I want to make it for my 6 year old son. How can i make it a US Twin size? Just smaller squares or hook? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My goal is to order everything this weekend and then complete by Christmas Eve. Help please and thank you!

    • Hi Paige, I’m not too sure of sizings for the US. But you can easily adjust the size of the square by adding or subtracting rounds to suit you. After you’ve made one square, multiple it by how many is in the pattern and see if that’s going to be big enough. Remember you can add more rounds on the border too 🙂 eg of calculation. One square = 4 inches, pretending there are 20 squares across, the blanket would be 80 inches across (then plus border). I hope this helps and good luck.

    I worked out which colors were needed for every 4 row section. I’ll email it to you if you want to add it. As well as a pic of my finished one.

    I used colors too similar for the sword outline and tshirt, but I was trying to use my stash and only needed to buy 2 balls of yarn so I did pretty good! Thanks again!!

    Just a comment which may save others money; I bought all the yarn as instructed in 100g balls. But I now think you meant 50g balls as I’m sure I’ll have enough for two blankets.

  32. Thank you so much for the pattern. I’m making it fir my cousin’s grandson. I have just finished the squares for this and it’s amazing. I have crocheted together and have the ends to sew in and put a border on. Not sure on the border colours yes but black will be the last round.

    • Hi I slip stitched through the back loop only using one of the square colours. It didn’t show on the front and marginally on the back.

      Fir the border I ended up with a couple of rows of silver in sc and finished of with one row of grey.
