Wheel of Hope Mandala Pattern

Here is my first mandala pattern. I think I have caught the bug making these beautiful designs. I already have another pattern in the works and hope to share that with you once it’s finished.

So here it is…

Materials:

  • Your choice of yarn
  • Appropriate size hook for yarn
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Notes:

  • This mandala is made up by crocheting in rounds
  • Each mandala will be finished in a different size, depending on what yarn and hook is used.
  • This pattern is written in US terms with UK terms in brackets ( )

Stitches:

Crochet Stitches Chart with fpdc

  • Front Post Double Crochet:

Placement of fdc p

Yarn over, insert hook behind stitch.

Placement of fdc part 1

Yarn over, and pull through.

Placement of fdc part 2

Yarn over, and pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through both loops.

Ta daa, finished fpdc (fptr).

  • Picot Stitch in this pattern is made by making ch 4 then sl st back into the 1st ch made.

Pattern:

Round 1:

Round 1 Finished

Start by making a magic loop, ch 3, 14dc (tr) in loop, join with sl st to top of ch 3. (15 sts)

Round 2:

Round 2 Finished

Ch 4 (dc + ch1), dc (tr) and ch 1 in each st around, join with sl st to 3rd ch of starting ch. (15 sts)

Round 3:

Round 3 Finished

Sl st to ch sp, ch 1, *2hdc (htr) in ch sp, hdc (htr) in next st*, repeat around making the last hdc (htr) in the ch st from previous round. (45 sts)

Round 4:

Round 4 Finished

Ch 5 (dc + ch 2), dc in same st, skip 2 sts, *dc, ch 2, dc in same st* repeat around, join to the ch 3 of ch 5 made at the start. (30 individual sts, 15 v sts)

Round 5:

Round 5 Finished

Sl st to ch sp, ch 3, 4dc (tr) in ch sp, *5dc in ch sp* repeat around, join with sl st to top of ch 3. (75 sts)

Round 6:

Round 6 Finished

Ch 4, skip st, *dc, ch 1, sk st, dc in next 2 sts, ch 1, sk st, dc*, repeat around, join with sl st to 3rd ch of first ch. (45 sts)

Round 7:

Round 7 Finished

Ch 1, sc (dc) in same sp, *2sc (dc) in sp, sc (dc) in st, 2sc (dc) in sp, sc (dc) in next 2 sts*, repeat around crocheting a sc (dc) in the last st, join with sl st to the starting ch 3. (105 sts)

Round 8:

Round 8 Finished

Ch 3, dc (tr) in next 2 sts, fpdc (fptr) around dc (tr) from round 6 (see stitches for step by step explanation), *dc (tr) in the next 6 sts, fpdc (fptr)* repeat around, dc in the next 3 sts, join with sl st to top of ch 3. (105 sts)

Round 9:

Round 9 Finished

Ch 5 (dc + ch 2), dc in same st, skip 2 sts, *dc, ch 2, dc in same st* repeat around, join to the ch 3 of ch 5 made at the start. (70 sts, 35 v sts)

Round 10:

Round 10 Finished

Ch 1, *3hdc (htr) in sp, fpdc (fptr) around top of the dcs (trs)* from round 9 (see photo below for placement), repeat around and join with sl st to first hdc (htr). (140 sts)

Round 11 Finished

Sl st 3 to top of fpdc (fptr) made in previous round, ch 1, sc (dc) in same sp, *ch 4, sc (dc) in top of fpdc (fptr)*, repeat around, ch 4, join with sl st to sc (dc). (35 loops)

Round 12:

Finished

Ch 1, *2 sc (dc), picot (ch 4, sl st to 1st ch), 2sc in loop*, repeat in each loop, join with sl st to first sc (dc) made. (140 sts, 35 picot sts)

And ta daa it’s finished.
