Mindless Crochet: How to crochet an easy cowl without really thinking

Lately I’ve been finding it impossible to switch off at night time especially at bedtime. Ideas floating around in my head of what I could be making, or things that I need to get done around the house. It just doesn’t stop.

I recently put up a post on my Instagram and Facebook page stating this problem and asking for advice and strategies that could help. The response was overwhelming. So many other women feeling just like myself.

Why do we struggle to switch off? Why can’t we sleep and why do we sleep so bad? Well, I can’t really answer those questions, I’m not educated in the sleep department. But what I can do is offer something that can help wind you down before bed.

Emma from Pippin Poppycock Crochet suggested I have a mindless crochet project to work on. I thought it was a wonderful idea! Because usually, I always have a new design on my hook or am creating something in my head.

Last night I decided on a project. Something simple and something that could be used and not thrown away in the corner, never to be thought of again haha.

I decided it would be a great idea to do it as a crochet/make along. More so a make along as there are no parts involved..So enough rambling on…here are the details.

Mindless Crochet Cowl

Materials

  • Yarn: 150g I’m using Stylecraft Batik 2 x Cream (C1) and 1 x Sage (C2). ( I didn’t use all of the yarn and did an extra two rows of cream and one of sage)
  • 4.5mm hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
Materials needed

Stitches and Abbreviations Used

  • Ch – chain
  • St/s – stitch/es
  • Hdc (htr) – half double crochet (half treble crochet)
  • Bl- back loop

You can be really mindless with this project and see where it takes you. There are two ways you can start this, either with a chain length or foundation hdc (htr) see instructions for both below. I will also update this with how to join the ends once we have finished the rows together.

Pattern using chain length start

Row 1: Using C1 chain a length of 140cm or chain 275+2. Turn your work.

Row 2: Hdc (htr) in 3rd st from hook, hdc (htr) in each st along. Turn your work.

Row 3-10: Ch 1, hdc (htr) in bl of 1st st and each st along. Turn your work. Repeat this row till you have 10 rows complete. Cut yarn at end of row 10 and attach C2.

Rows 11-15: Using C2, repeat row 3. Cut yarn at end of row 15.

Making hdc (htr) into back loop

Pattern using foundation hdc (htr)

Row 1: If using foundation hdc (htr), make a length either 140cm or 275 stitches.

Row 2-10: Ch 1, hdc (htr) in bl of each st along. Turn your work. Repeat this row till you have 10 rows complete. Cut yarn at end of row 10.

Row 11-15: Using C2, repeat round 2, cut yarn at end of row 15.

Photo because I can lol

I will update you once I have finished making the rows. This way we are making it together 🤗😁.

I really hope you enjoy this mindless crochet project, I hope that it brings you some peace and frees your mind. Stay tuned because I will be doing a blog post from all those amazing suggestions the other day. You guys are amazing x

Keep keeping on. And remember to share your work in my FB group, and Instagram. Use the hashtag #mindlesscrochetcowl too so I can see your beautiful work. Much love, Em x

UPDATE: 24/01/2020

I’m cruising along effortlessly with the second ball of my main colour now attached. How are you going with yours?

UPDATE: 02/02/2020

So by now you would have added your second colour in and are ready to join. YIPPEE although I’m a little upset it didn’t last that long. Time to think of another mindless design.

Ready to join and weave in ends.

Below you will see a photo of how I sewed it togethre. Just simply weave in corresponding ends using the same colour as the rows you worked.

Once you have joined and woven in the ends you can cut your yarn.

Then… to hide the not-so-nice join, create a chain length enough to wrap around the rows but tight enough to keep it looking good. I’ll show you photos of what I did because I chained too many and it didn’t look very nice. I didn’t remake it. Aint nobody got time for that!

The second photo below shows the incorrect lenght…unless you like it like that obviously….

I ended up folding the ‘thing’ and just sewing it back on itself. Personally it just holds the rows together much nicer.

I hope you have enjoyed your mindless crocheting and will love wearing or gifting your cowl.

I’m going to put my thinking cap on for the next project… I already have an idea of what I’d like to make. Just need the yarn to go with it.

Until next time, happy hooking and don’t forget to share your photos using the hashtag #mindlesscrochetcowl.

Much love,
Emx
