It is such an honour to be a brand rep for Nurturing Fibres, beautiful hand-dyed yarns from South Africa. 

Here is the free pattern for this cute little octagon. 

Notes:


* This pattern is written in US terms with UK within parenthesis (  )
* Each round is started using a different colour and with a standing st
* On round 3, chain 2 sts are made above the fpdc (fptr) sts
* Make one complete motif using rounds 1 – 3, then make other motifs by joining to complete ones

Materials:


* Eco-Cotton from Nurturing Fibres 10g Bon-Bons in all the colours (or your choice of colours)
* 4mm hook was used in this pattern, but whatever size you feel comfortable with when using this yarn
* Scissors
* Yarn needle

Stitches & Definitions Used:


Ch = chain
Jss = join with slip stitch
Sc = single crochet (dc)
Hdc = half double crochet (htr)
Dc2tog cluster = double crochet two together (tr2tog)
Fpdc = front post double crochet

Pattern:

Round 1: Using a magic ring (or ch 6, jss to 1st ch to form ring), ch 2 (counts as beginning of dc2tog (tr2tog) cluster, dc (tr) in same sp (counts as end of cluster), ch 2, (cluster, ch 2) in ring x 7 times, jss to 1st cluster made. Fasten off. 
(8 x cluster, 8 x ch-2 sp)

Round 1: Beginning cluster stitch
Round 1: Complete  (8 x cluster, 8 x ch-2 sp)

Round 2 Using New Colour: In any ch-2 sp, make a standing dc2tog (tr2tog) cluster, ch 1, fpdc (fptr) around next cluster from rnd 1, ch 1, *cluster in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, fpdc (fptr) around next cluster, ch 1*, repeat from * to* around, jss to 1st cluster made. Fasten off. 
(8 x clusters, 8 x fpdc (fptr),  16 x ch-1 sp)

Round 2: Showing beginning of round
Round 2: Complete (8 x cluster, 8 x fpdc (fptr), 16 x ch-1 sp)

Round 3 Using New Colour:  Make one complete motif, then follow instructions for joining motifs together. 

Motif 1:
In any ch-1 sp after a fpdc (fptr), make a standing hdc (htr), hdc (htr) in same sp, 2 hdc (htr) in next ch-1 sp, ch 2, *2 hdc (htr) in next 2 ch-1 sps, ch 2*, repeat from * to * around, jss to 1st hdc (htr) made. Fasten off. 
(32 hdc (htr), 8 x ch-2 sps)

All other motifs – see below

Round 3:

All other motifs: 
In any ch-1 sp after a fpdc (fptr), make a standing hdc (htr), hdc (htr) in same sp, 2 hdc (htr) in next ch-1 sp, ch 2, *2 hdc (htr) in next 2 ch-1 sps, ch 2*, repeat from * to * around, till you are ready to join to complete motif. Joins will be made in the ch-2 sps of current and complete motifs. 
Make sure you finish with 2 hdc (htr) in ch-1 sp (see photo below), ch 1, sc (dc) in ch-2 sp of complete motif, 2 hdc (htr) in next 2 ch-1 sps of current motif, sc (dc) in ch-2 sp of complete motif, ch 1, complete current motif as per beginning of this round, jss to 1st hdc (htr) made. Round 3: Just before joining current motif to complete motif
2 hdc (htr) in 2 ch-1 sps
Round 3:  Ch 1, insert hook from back to front of complete motif and make a sc (dc)
Round 3: Sc (dc) just made in complete motif
Round 3: 2 hdc (htr) in next 2 ch-1 sps on current motif
Round 3: After 4 hdc (htr) sts, sc (dc) in complete motif, ch 1, continue octagon as per beginning of round, jss to 1st hdc (htr) made. Sorry it’s a bit blurry
TA DAAAA Continue in this matter, joining current octagons into either one or two complete motifs
