Kaleidoscope Granny Square
As promised I’m trying to catch up with writing out my patterns in order to share them with you. Here is one I did today and I hope you like it, I really look forward to seeing the creations you come up with, all the different colour combinations, colours etc and what you actually make with the squares 😀
So here is the pattern:
Materials:
- Yarn of your choosing (I used 8ply aka dk yarn and a 5mm hook)
- Corresponding hook size
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
Notes:
- This pattern is written in US terms
- I used 7 colours for this design, starting at one certain colour and then ‘ordering’ them in what colours I thought go best from one to the other. I can’t really word that properly as my baby brain is tiring (almost bed time) Each new square, I flipped the order of the colours (see photos), then chose a new start colour and did the same again… trying to make sense lol
- Fpdc together – yarn over, insert yarn behind st to the right of the hook, pull hook back, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, insert yarn behind st to the left of the hook, pull hook back, yarn over pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through three loops.

From top left to right rounds 1&2, 3, 4, middle row rounds 5, 6, bottom row rounds 7, 8 and first round of squaring off.
Using colour of your choosing; Start with the magic loop/ring
- 8 sc in loop, join with sl st (8 sts)
- Ch 3, dc in same st, 2dc in each st around, join with sl st (16 sts)
- Change colour, ch 4, (dc, ch 1) in each st around, join with sl st (16 sts)
- Change colour, ch 3, *fpdc around dc sts from previous round, dc in next st*, repeat around, join with sl st (32 sts)
- Change colour, ch 3, dc in next st, fpdc around previous fpdc, *dc 2, fpdc*, repeat around, join with sl st (48 sts)
- Change colour, ch 2, hdc in next st, *fpdc together in previous fpdc (see notes), hdc behind the fpdc st you just made, hdc 2*, repeat around ending with a fpdc, hdc, join with sl st (64 sts) {see photo below pattern}
- Change colour, ch 2, hdc in each st around, join with sl st (64 sts)
- Change colour, ch 2, hdc 3, *fpdc, hdc 4*, repeat around, join with sl st (80 sts)

Squaring off
- Attach yarn in fpdc st, ch 4, tr in same st, *tr, dc 2, hdc 3, sc 7, hdc 3, dc 2, tr, (2tr, ch 2, 2tr) in same sp (creating the corner), repeat around leaving out the last 2tr, join with sl st (92 sts)
- Ch 3, dc 22 *(2dc, ch 1, 2dc) in corner sp, dc 23*, repeat around ending with (2dc, ch 1, 2dc) in final corner, join with sl st to top of ch 3 (108 sts) {If you prefer you can do (2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in each corner space, entirely up to you}
Happy Crocheting! Remember I’d love to see what you make #theloopystitch #kaleidoscopegranny on Instagram. Have a lovely night, I’m off to bed, I can feel restless legs and heartburn coming… argh lol.
It looks amazing!!! I love it!
